Picture this: It’s Monday morning.
You are sipping your morning coffee, staring at a too-long to-do list.
Somewhere between answering your emails, preparing for your afternoon meeting, and thinking about what you must prepare for dinner, you remind yourself to “ find balance”.
Does it sound familiar? We all have been there.
The phrase, ‘ finding balance,” feels like a myth — something we have been chasing forever.
An elusive ideal where we are trying to align our work, family, health, and personal interests perfectly, flowing smoothly. But honestly, does that even happen?
The problem with balance
The word “balance” implies that we must always weigh all aspects of our lives equally. Well, it looks and sounds great in theory, but in real life, it can feel like walking on a tightrope.
The slightest shift — an urgent deadline, a sick child, or a surprise visit by in-laws — and suddenly, you are stumbling.
Whenever we try so hard to achieve balance, we usually end up feeling more pressure. Instead of going with the flow, we are always adjusting, tweaking, and often questioning if we have “got it right.”

The idea of flow makes more sense
In work and life, some days demand more of you than others.
There will be seasons where your career takes center stage, and you’ll put in those extra hours.
Other times, your family or health will need more attention. The key isn’t to balance them equally every day but to let life flow through its rhythms.
I realized that this concept of flow permitted me to embrace the messiness of life.
It allowed me to accept that some weeks, I’ll be knee-deep in work projects, while other weeks, I might focus more on self-care or spending time with loved ones — and that’s okay.
Practical ways to embrace flow
I am always trying to balance life and work and have been obsessed with the idea of balance. But then, I started slowly let it go with a flow. I did feel uncomfortable at first, but slowly, I have started to embrace flow in a way that it feels more authentic and less stressful.
- Prioritize what matters right now: You need to focus on what’s urgent or important in your life at this moment, whether it is your work, your health or your relationships. Remember, not everything will be equally pressing all the time and that’s perfectly fine.
- Stay in the present. When I am working, I try to be fully there. When I spend time with my friends, I aim to be in the moment. Well, multitasking doesn’t work well when it comes to living your life fully, so try to immerse yourself in one thing at a time.
- Just don’t be perfect. You don’t need to hold yourself to impossible standards. Some days you can work late nights and other days, you may just binge-watch your favorite shows after a long day. Give yourself the grace to flow with it.
Next time you catch yourself trying to “find balance,” take a deep breath. Pause. Ask yourself what needs your focus right now — and let the rest flow. Because the beauty of life isn’t in how evenly we distribute our time; it’s in how present we are for the moments that matter.
