A Journey Through Biotech Pioneer’s Life And Success Story
This article is going to be about a woman who has achieved all and is regarded with many things. To say the least, she is India’s self-made richest woman and a recipient of the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards. The accidental entrepreneur wanted to become a brewmaster but landed in the boat of becoming a successful entrepreneur. She is none other than Kiran Mazumdar Shaw who founded Biotin India. Have a look at her complete journey in this piece of writing.
The initial days
Kiran always wanted to become a brewmaster. Moreover, this was a bold choice in the 70s let alone the training to become one. She went to Australia to pursue her dream. There at the Federation University, she studied malting and brewing. She furthermore topped the class which gave her more confidence and self-assurance.
Also, did you know that Shaw was the only woman in 10 men there? Even though people made her believe otherwise during that period, she was self-assured that one’s gender does not matter when it comes to choosing a study course or career.
How she brought herself out from the male-dominated society
After completing her course in Australia, Shaw returned to India to pursue her career in brewing. However, every company was reluctant to hire a woman for the role. She tried very hard to be in but to no avail. Unfortunately, she then started looking for jobs in the international market.
This was the time when the idea of Biocon would enter her mind. She met an Irish biotech entrepreneur who suggested she should start Biocon. Shaw found the idea very interesting and she was aware that she could rock it. She knew that it was time to make a place in the so-called man’s world.
The beginning and success of her business
Shaw was only 25 at the time when she started her company. And interestingly the company was started in a garage. Fortunately, she had a good friend who would support her throughout the whole journey. Her friend Pratima Rao thus left her job to help Shaw with secretarial support.
Today, she is the mission director of Biocon Foundation. Her success as an entrepreneur was a slap on the faces of the people who doubted her ability because of her gender.
What does she have to say for the other entrepreneurs?
Shaw believes that one must be true to oneself and persist to succeed. Focusing on the journey instead of the end goal is the key. She states that you should not move from one idea to another but rather stick to one. Additionally, you should not think of becoming an entrepreneur to get rich quickly.
There are no shortcuts and many youngsters with the urge of getting into the market in hurry fail to make it. Hence, patience and with the right idea and focus, you shall reach there one day.
