An Inspiring Story Of Sunil Vashisht And His Flying Cakes
Flying Cakes, a multi-crore brand with 15 outlets in India has a background story that we witness in any Bollywood or Hollywood movie. It has travelled a long-long journey of struggles, failures, and downfalls to reach where it is today. Let’s knock on the year 1992 when the journey began and discover the whole story from back then to the present.
Sunil Vashisht was only in class 10 in 1992 when he learnt that he alone had to take his own responsibility. He never had his parents’ financial support for his studies. From class 10 to his graduation, he took up endless jobs to complete his studies. While he managed till class 12, he, unfortunately, dropped out from the second year of his graduation.
By this time he had worked in every possible corner from a milk delivery person, and a waiter to a salesperson, and a courier delivery person. However, managing his graduation studies along with the jobs was out of the question. So getting free from college, he was fully available to concentrate on his job. And, ended up joining Domino as a delivery guy.
Sunil had seen struggles and he had been carrying out all the burdens and his financial life by himself alone. Hence, the experiences made him a person who would give his all to whatever work he was into. Thus, his dedication and consistency in the job allowed him the promotion to assistant manager within only 2 years.
He was doing well and was even married by this time until one-day destiny had planned another path waiting for him. He received a call from his home while at the office that his wife had gone into labour. He asked the authority for leave but was rejected. Sunil left for his home nonetheless. The next day however when he came back to the office he was told that he was no longer needed there.
This incident undoubtedly hit him hard and he made himself certain that he was never going to work for somebody else in his life. He couldn’t moreover sit free at his home when he had a family to look after. Thus, he opened an egg roll cart in front of JNU in Delhi. Again, everything went quite well for some time until the MCD asked him to stop his cart.
During the same time, one of his friends told him during a discussion that Noida was getting into the bakery for sweets and desserts. Sunil liked it and decided that it might turn out to be a good idea for his start-up. By borrowing some money from his friends and selling his wife’s jewellery, he opened a cake shop in 2007. He named it ‘Flying Cakes’ and though the shop didn’t do very well initially, in 2008 another event took place that changed his life for the good this time.
In fact, destiny made him reach the shore after years of hardships. Well, what happened was that one day he was distributing the advertisement pamphlets for his cake shop that he handed over one of these to a woman. That woman indeed bought a cake for his son and she liked it so much that she signed a contract with his cake shop for all future events.
Did you wonder who was the woman who carried the good luck in her pocket and handed it over to Sunil? Well, she was the HR Manager of a multinational IT company HCL. Moreover, it was just the beginning of what was laying ahead for Sunil. Flying Cakes started doing better and better from that day on.
Today, it has 15 outlets in cities such as Kolkata, Delhi, Bengaluru, Maharashtra, and others. Most importantly, each outlet receives more than 100 orders every month. Sunil Vashisht’s life and success truly speak for what we say ‘hard work indeed pays off one day.’
