Namakwali: This Team Of Women Employees Are Spreading Uttarakhand’s Traditional Food Throughout The Country
Sashi Bahuguna Raturi belongs to Uttarakhand and she has had always a huge heart for the values of mountain traditions, especially food. However, she did not like how the changes have been coming and altering their food traditions. She, hence, decided to take things into her own hands with the purpose of preserving the food and culture of her state.
Sashi had in her mind to start something which would also take forward her family legacy. She thus came up with the idea of introducing pisyu loon to the whole country. She of course would be using the age-old traditional recipes for it. Finally, in 2018, she launched her brand named Namakwali.
What recipe is used in Namakwali?
In order to prepare this age-old pisyu loon, Sashi uses rock salt, fresh Himalayan herbs, and different spices. This mixture is then ground on a slab. More speciality adds to it through the fact that the grinding takes place on a traditional slab called sil-batta. Moreover, Sashi prepares this flavoured salt in various flavours such as hemp, garlic, and ginger. Garlic and the mixed flavoured salts are doing as their best-sellers at present.
The favoured salt is tasty as hell however its task doesn’t only end here as it has one more speciality attached to it. Well, if your prepared food sometimes lacks the taste of spices, this salt is there to save your dish! In other words, it brings the missing taste and magic to even the tasteless recipes.
How is Namakwali doing in the market?
There are 11 employees in the team working on pisyu loon at Namakwali. Most importantly, all the employees are women who run this successful company. This team of women handpick each ingredient from the foothills. And, they thoroughly enjoy working for Namakwali.
The whole team sit together in the courtyard of a random team member’s house for the task. They sing traditional songs and laugh together while grinding the salt. Namakwali has customers from Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai. The team ships about 35kg of pisyu loon to the customers from these places and the earning goes in lacs.
Certainly, the hard work and dedication of the team of these strong women have brought them the success they truly deserved. Above all, they have spread their state’s traditional food throughout the country.
