BENGALURU, June 26, 2025 – Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla has made history as the first Indian to board the International Space Station (ISS), reigniting India’s human spaceflight ambitions after over four decades. Launching aboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon “Grace” as part of Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), Shukla’s mission is a powerful symbol of India’s rising capabilities and aspirations in space exploration.

✨ Shubhanshu Shukla’s Journey to the ISS

Docking with the ISS on June 26, 2025, at 4:16 PM IST, Shukla became the 634th astronaut in history, warmly welcomed by the Expedition-73 crew led by veteran astronaut Peggy Whitson.

Floating into the ISS with a smile, Shukla delivered a heartfelt message:

    > “It has been a wonderful ride… Whatever expectations I had were surpassed by the view… Thank you so much.”
“Aapke pyaar aur ashirwad se… Let’s make this journey very exciting… Jai Hind. Jai Bharat.”

🚀 Beyond Glory: Strengthening ISRO’s Gaganyaan Mission

While this mission marks India’s triumphant return to human spaceflight after Rakesh Sharma’s 1984 mission, it is strategically crucial for ISRO’s Gaganyaan program.

During his stay, Shukla will conduct seven India-sponsored microgravity experiments on plant growth, muscle atrophy, microbial behavior, and cognitive functions, under NASA and ISRO’s monitoring.

The data and operational exposure from this mission will help prepare Indian astronauts for Gaganyaan-4, India’s planned fully indigenous crewed mission in 2027.

    —

🏠 The Human Side: Family, Community, and National Pride

Hailing from Lucknow, Shukla’s journey from NDA cadet to spacefarer has inspired the nation. Leaders including Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath hailed his mission as a “proud moment for India” under PM Modi’s vision for technological and scientific growth.

His emotional social media posts to his wife, Kamna, and his gratitude towards the nation have touched millions. Across India, schools and communities live-streamed the launch, turning his journey into a moment of collective pride.

    —

🌌 Adapting to Life in Microgravity

In his first days aboard the ISS, Shukla reported mild discomfort, including dizziness and drowsiness—a common adaptation phase in zero gravity. He humorously likened his early movements to a toddler learning to walk.

During his two-week mission, he will live inside the Dragon capsule, conduct operational tasks, and adjust to the space environment, advancing India’s scientific goals while learning from seasoned astronauts.

    —

🛰️ What’s Next: Paving the Way for India’s Space Future

Shukla’s participation in a commercial crew mission via SpaceX is not just a milestone but a calculated step towards India’s independent capabilities in human spaceflight.

By gaining operational experience under NASA’s mentorship, ISRO strengthens its readiness for sustained human presence in low Earth orbit, preparing for Gaganyaan’s future missions.

    —

🇮🇳 Final Word: India Reaches for the Stars

Shubhanshu Shukla’s historic mission to the ISS is more than a personal achievement—it’s India’s collective victory in space science, technological progress, and national pride.

From the skies over Lucknow to the infinite expanse of space, Shukla’s journey proves that the stars hold no boundaries for India.

    Jai Hind. Jai Bharat.
