How Jayashree Ratan Is Contributing To The Breast Cancer Survivors
India is a country where every 4 minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. And because of the mastectomy surgeries, the entire breast tissue has to be removed. Whether it’s what society creates or a person’s inner self, almost everyone desires to look good and whole. Many of the women who undergo this physically and emotionally painful procedure do wish to look like their earlier selves.
While some such women can afford silicone breast prostheses, some can’t, especially in India. Hence, to achieve the illusion of full breasts, they stuff cotton balls and other such cloth things. As a result, it often ends ups with rashes, infections, or other skin abrasions.
Feeling empathy is one thing but initiating things for others out of empathy is what makes the difference. Jayashree Ratan is one of such people who brings themselves out from the crowd to make things better for the needy. This incredible woman is the founder of Saaisha India. She established this voluntary organisation to make crocheted prostheses.
What made Jayashree Ratan start the voluntary organisation?
Jayashree was affected by how breast cancer survivors have to be under a pressure to look a certain way which makes them undergo pain along with the traumatic surgery. Hence, she decided to make crocheted prostheses to help those women out.
Her voluntary organisation was established in 2018 in Mumbai and since then it has distributed about 5,700 prostheses. Adding more to this amazing organisation is the fact that these prostheses are of course distributed free of cost. There are over 270 volunteers working in this organisation from across India. That is to say, the volunteers are connected from UAE and US as well apart from India.
How good these knitted prostheses are?
These are made from a hundred per cent mercerised cotton yarn. Which consequently feels very soft on the skin and prevents allergies. These are hand washable and can be used for upto 2 years. Moreover, these are available in different cup sizes as well. And they fit like a dream into the mastectomy bras.
Jayashree Ratan feels so contended with her work which has changed so many lives. Moreover, it only requires a few hours to create each product. Sometimes little efforts pay the biggest rewards.
