Humble Beginnings in Andhra Pradesh
In 1978, Grandhi Mallikarjuna Rao—popularly known as GM Rao—began his entrepreneurial journey by acquiring a small jute mill in Andhra Pradesh. At the time, he was far from envisioning the global infrastructure empire he would eventually create.
Over the next decade, Rao experimented with 28 different businesses, from sugar and breweries to banking and insurance. While many of these ventures saw mixed success, his relentless drive and adaptability prepared him for bigger opportunities.
The Turning Point: Liberalization of 1994
India’s economic liberalization in 1991–94 transformed the country’s business landscape. Recognizing the enormous potential in infrastructure, Rao made a bold move: he sold off unrelated ventures and focused exclusively on infrastructure development, particularly airports. This decision would define the legacy of GMR Group.
GMR Airports Infrastructure: A Global Force
Today, Rao’s flagship entity, GMR Airports Infrastructure, is valued at an impressive ₹73,575 crore. The company operates and manages some of the busiest and most advanced airports:
- Delhi (Indira Gandhi International Airport) – India’s busiest airport and a major global hub.
- Hyderabad (Rajiv Gandhi International Airport) – India’s largest greenfield airport by area.
- Goa (Manohar International Airport, Mopa) – A modern gateway to India’s top tourist destination.
- Internationally – GMR also manages airports in the Philippines (Mactan–Cebu International Airport) and Indonesia, further strengthening its global footprint.
Together, these projects make GMR Asia’s largest private airport operator and among the world’s biggest by passenger traffic.
Beyond Airports: Sports & Aviation Training
Rao’s vision extends beyond airports:
- He is a co-owner of Delhi Capitals, the IPL cricket franchise, expanding GMR’s influence into sports and entertainment.
- In partnership with Airbus, he launched the GMR School of Aviation, aimed at training India’s next generation of aviation professionals. This initiative reflects his commitment to skilling youth and shaping the future of Indian aviation.
The Legacy of GM Rao
From a single jute mill to a global aviation empire, GM Rao’s journey is a testament to vision, resilience, and the power of strategic focus. His story illustrates how bold decisions—like pivoting from diverse ventures to infrastructure—can transform a regional businessman into a global industry leader.
As GMR continues to expand its horizons, GM Rao’s legacy stands as an inspiration for entrepreneurs who dare to think big and adapt with the times.
