Punchline: Faith meets vigilance — Hyderabad goes dry to ensure peace during Ganesh immersion.
Hyderabad Orders Citywide Liquor Ban
Ahead of Ganesh Nimajjanam (Visarjan) on September 6, 2025, authorities in Hyderabad have announced the closure of liquor outlets across the city. The move is aimed at ensuring public safety and maintaining law and order during one of the city’s largest annual religious gatherings.
The directive, issued by Cyberabad Police Commissioner Avinash Mohanty under Section 20 of the Telangana State Excise Act, 1974, orders the closure of all toddy and wine shops, as well as bars in restaurants, except those in star hotels and registered clubs. The closure will be effective from 6 AM on September 6 to 6 AM on September 7.
Rachakonda Extends the Restrictions
In the Rachakonda Commissionerate, similar restrictions have been imposed (excluding the Bhongir zone). Here, the liquor outlets will remain shut from 6 AM Saturday to 6 PM Sunday, extending the dry period to a full 36 hours. This step has been taken to ensure peace and prevent any untoward incidents during the immersion processions.
A Multi-Layered Security Strategy
The closure of liquor stores is part of a wider security and crowd management plan:
- Traffic restrictions will be implemented across major immersion routes.
- Police deployment has been strengthened with additional forces and quick-response teams.
- Coordination with civic bodies ensures sanitation, illumination, and emergency medical assistance along the procession paths.
Why the Ban Matters
Ganesh Nimajjanam attracts lakhs of devotees, and the immersion processions often extend for long hours across Hyderabad. Authorities argue that restricting alcohol sales helps:
- Minimize risks of alcohol-related disturbances.
- Ensure smoother management of massive public gatherings.
- Reinforce cultural respect and the sanctity of the festival.
Conclusion
The temporary liquor ban during Ganesh Nimajjanam 2025 reflects Hyderabad’s attempt to balance faith with public safety. By going dry for 36 hours, the city is not only safeguarding its citizens but also ensuring that devotion takes center stage without disruption.
When devotion marches through the streets, order and peace must walk alongside.
