We all have been hooked on Johnny-Amber Case for the past few weeks. This high-profile case involving two famous celebs has been deluging the social media feeds. The actors were married between 2015 to 2016 for 15 months. However, their marriage ended bitterly, which called for a high-profile divorce case. Moving ahead to 2018, Amber Heard wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post where she accused Johnny Depp of domestic violence. This move took a huge toll on Johnny’s career. Later, Johnny filed a defamation case against Amber, and now the actors are embroiled in a fierce defamation case boiling over the domestic abuse allegations.
The case got enormous highlights from fans of both parties, which created a media frenzy all over the world. But the downside to this case was the online harassment that came on to Amber. Many fans came out with hashtags like #JusticeForJohnny to support Johnny Depp, but they also trolled Heard at every statement she gave in the court. Even though Depp’s name wasn’t mentioned anywhere in the op-ed written by Heard, his lawsuit claimed that it was about him and how it damaged his reputation as well as career.
Now, these are the facts that both the parties to court have provided, but it’s time when we discuss the negative impact this case has left on the real domestic violence survivors.
What Johnny Depp Faced In This Marriage And Case:
During the trial, it was known that there were multiple instances when Amber Heard hurt Johnny physically and emotionally. Moving ahead to 2020, a phone recording was released in which Amber was heard admitting that she did hit Johnny Depp.
The phone recording had Amber saying, “I’m sorry that I didn’t… hit you across the face in a proper slap, but I was hitting you, it was not punching you. Babe, you’re not punched.
“I don’t know what the motion of my actual hand was, but you’re fine, I did not hurt you, I did not punch you, I was hitting you.”
In the same phone recording, Johnny was heard saying that he left last night because he couldn’t take the idea of physically abusing each other. But before this recording came into the highlight, Amber’s op-ed on domestic violence cost Johnny his career and reputation in the Hollywood industry.
How Social Media Framed Amber As A Bad Person
More than the evidence and facts, the social media trolls, harassment, and unwanted opinions framed Amber as the wrong person in the case. Usually, a case dealing with domestic abuse is not allowed to be televised irrespective of its renowned celebrities. Not only this, the jury of this case was made up of five men and two women, and according to the studies, men are likely to blame the victims of abuse and rape.
Considering all of this, the case wasn’t obviously unbiased, which gave Depp’s supporters full advantage to manipulate the images and spread incorrect facts with the help of memes.
Having said this, other survivors of domestic violence will struggle to come out and speak about their stories as the fear of being misjudged by the court, system, and people will always creep in. The way social media attacked Amber Heard on so many fronts, the survivors will not hesitate even more to seek help from the law and the system.
